Garden Coaching FAQ

At Sunflower Garden Coaching, we believe every gardener deserves clear, simple answers. Here are the top questions people ask us and our warm, practical advice.

When is the best time to start planting my garden?

Start planting after the last frost date in your area for best results. Check your USDA Hardiness Zone to plan ahead. For those in zones 8+, you can also plant many things in the Fall as well. Planting in the Summer and Winter when weather can be at their extremes is not recommended.

How do I prepare my soil for planting?

Test your soil, add compost or organic matter, and loosen it to at least 6 inches deep to help roots grow strong. One amazing thing to add to your soil at least once a year (I do it twice) is worm castings!

What plants grow well in my area?

Choose plants suited to your USDA Hardiness Zone and sunlight conditions. Native and climate-adapted plants need less care and water.

How often should I water my garden?

Water deeply 1–2 times per week. This can change with the weather and types of plants. Deep watering helps roots grow deeper and makes plants stronger and more drought-tolerant. Overhead sprinkler watering is the least efficient way to water your garden as most of the water gets lost to run-off. Since most people only have their sprinklers stay on for 2-8 minutes, the water never gets down deep. Drip irrigation is the best, but remember that you need to have the system saty on for 30-40 minutes.

How do I get rid of pests naturally?

Use companion planting, handpicking, and organic sprays like neem oil to keep pests under control without harming pollinators.

Why are my plants turning yellow or dying?

Yellow leaves often mean overwatering, nutrient deficiency, or pests. Check soil moisture first, then test for missing nutrients or inspect for bugs.

What are the easiest vegetables for beginners to grow?

Start with lettuce, radishes, tomatoes, zucchini, and green beans. They're easy, fast-growing, and rewarding for first-time gardeners.

How can I make my garden low-maintenance?

Use native plants, add mulch to retain moisture and block weeds, and consider drip irrigation to save time and water.

What should I plant for year-round color?

Mix spring bulbs, summer perennials, fall bloomers, and evergreens for beauty across all seasons. Make sure you incorporate different foliage colors and textures.

How do I attract bees, butterflies, and pollinators to my garden?

Plant nectar-rich flowers like lavender and sunflowers, avoid pesticides, and provide shallow water sources for pollinators.
